How much energy do I use on an average day?

How much energy do I use at home per winter day? ~95kWh

  • 3kWh for driving via electricity

    • home to work and back is 5.6 mile
    • lets dbl that for when I drive to store or other errands -> 11.2 miles
    • lets round up 12 miles
    • the tesla model 3 uses 0.25kwh per mile
    • so 12 miles is 3kwh
    • this assumes no heat or ac
  • 9kWh for powering home via electricity

    • decemebers bill was 252kWh
    • this is ~8.4kWh per day
    • round up and assume 9kWh per day
  • 1.2kWh for stove via propane

    • invoices from paraco list "units" of propane, Im gonna assume 1 unit is 1 gallon
    • looks like I use ~15 gallons per year,
    • 1 gallon of propane is 27kWh
    • so 15 gallons is 405kWh
    • this is ~1.15kWh per day
  • 81kWh for heat via oil (assume this level from October to March)

    • I use AFCO
    • last bill was $660
    • current cost on their website is $4.449/gallon
    • so 660/4.449 = ~149 gallons
    • 1 gallon of oil is ~41kWh
    • so 149 gallons is ~6,100 kWh
    • what time period was this bill for? last bill was Oct 18th, this bill was Jan 2nd
    • so 6,100/75 = ~81kWh per day

How many solar panels would I need to provide all that power?

  • for my location, 4.5kWh/m2/day is the average solar radiation
  • solar panels are only 15% efficient
  • so 4.5kWh/m2/day * 0.15 = 0.675kWh/m2/day
  • 0.675kWh/m2/day * 140m2 = ~95kWh/day
  • how big is 140m2 in square feet?
  • 140m2 * 10.764 = 1,512.96 square feet
  • the land my house sits on is 150x50 = 7,500 square feet
  • I'd need to cover 20% of my land with solar panels
  • this ignores efficiency of the inverter and the batteries

How much of New York would we need to cover with solar panels to power the entire state?

Notes

  • this ignores my energy use at work
